Dorothy Formerly: Salon de thé Claude

A tearoom whose title makes reference to Victor Fleming's 1939 mythological fantasy classic THE WIZARD OF OZ, starring Hollywood entertainer in extremo and gay icon Judy Garland (1922—69) as Dorothy Gale and, as her Technicolor dream-sequence chaperones ("friends of Dorothy"), Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr. Garland's status as a gay icon has, for newer generations, been usurped by Madonna, Gaga, Britney, Kylie et al, but this lunch-and-cakes establishment has gone classic retro in its choice of name. Opened January 2023 by an entrepreneurial trio (two of them gay) who also operate the two establishments that bookend Dorothy: French-Belgian bistro BOHM & Berkel and Duplex bar (at numbers 3 and 7, respectively) in the quaint and olde-worlde square Hendrik Conscienceplein [see entries]. Menu includes breakfast (pastries, muffins, eggs Benedict/Florentine etc), lunch (open face sandwiches, daily soups, salads) and afternoon cake/coffee/tea or a full-on English-style afternoon tea (finger sandwiches, scone/jam/clotted cream, pastries). Decor colours include something approaching emerald green – no doubt an ode to Oz. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
