FOMU (FotoMuseum Provincie Antwerpen)
A serious museum devoeted to all aspects of photography going right back to the beginning, FoMu not only boasts an impressive collection of photographs – including works by Charles Nègre, Henri Le Secq, Edmond Fierlants, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Leonard Misonne, Edward Steichen, Paul Strand, Willy Kessels, Man Ray, Brassai, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn, William Klein, Lee Freedlander, Robert Adams, Nicholas Nixon, Lynne Cohen, Carl de Keyzer, Dirk Braeckman and Andreas Gursky – but houses one of the most vital public displays of historical photographic apparatus, prompted by the purchase of Michel Auer's private collection in 1973. FoMu is also interested in the context and conditions of photograhy-making, and stretches its remit to include family albums, business photography, sporting, fashion and advertising photography, examples of scientific applications of photography, photographcially decorated ornamental and functional items, printed texts illustrated with photographs, memorabilia and more. Located in the southwestern tip of the city near the river, but just minutes away from the contemporary art museum M KHA [see entry], fashion hotspots, good food and much more.
