Something of a local institution, the warm and welcoming Sjalot en Schanul ('Shallot and Spring Onion') was opened in 1993 by Marieke Avermaete, with a menu of fresh and home-made southern Mediterranean-inspired dishes from her own recipes. Since 2006 Marieke has run the operation with her now-married partner Chrisje, maintaining the same excellent standards, juggling inventive approaches to salads and vegetables with a certain regard for meat (eg filet mignon). Attracts a loyal following and is located in a quiet street just north of Grote Markt, about as central as Antwerp gets. The kitchen closes at 9.30pm.
